Lime Mortar Workshops

A key strategy is to involve volunteers from the community to work on the wall under supervision using Lime mortar. We have already held three workshops involving more than 20 volunteers. We have plans for at least three more days in 2025. These workshops have been supported by grants from Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, Working for Walton and public donations.

Lime mortar is composed of lime and an aggregate such as sand, mixed with water. It is one of the oldest known types of mortar, used in ancient Rome and Greece. The soft and porous properties of lime mortar provide certain advantages when working with softer building materials such as natural stone. Working with lime mortar is a dying craft.
